Sat, 28 May 2011Gas Going Up . . . Inflation on the rise? (REPRISE)
Yesterday, paid $3.01.9 for super and today $2.83.9 for regular at Costco. This is one of the cheapest places around. Gas is definitely on the rise. I wonder if inflation is going to be our next major problem. With people getting layed off, furloughed, and taking pay cuts to keep their jobs, inflation would be one of the worst things that could happen. This comment was written in June, 2009, and gas has DEFINITELY gone up. It's hovering around $4.00 in my neck of the woods and most other necks in the U.S. today. Since I originally wrote this, we have sold our Chevy Astro Van and purchased a used Toyota Prius just to cut down on our gas purchases. It seems for most folks food and fuel are taking a bigger bite out of their budgets. With Memorial Day this weekend, the news has had the usual stories about the start of the Summer driving season. It seems that most people are not giving up travel, but they are being smarter about it -- traveling shorter distances or making fewer trips. Even those who are travelling farther are staying with family and friends when they get there, affecting hotels and motels. This has to affect the tourist economy and the economy as a whole. It's probably especially bad for minimum wage jobs as resorts and vacation destinations see fewer people traveling the distance to get there and not staying in the hotels if they do. posted 08:30 [/Rreprise] permanent link Turtles and Air Traffic (REPRISE)
It appears that flights were delayed up to 90 minutes by a herd of turtles crossing a runway at JFK in New York. It seems that a trip of several yards -- admittedly a slow trip -- cost air travelers a good deal of time. At a speed of 600 miles per hour, that short migration cost travelers 900 miles of distance. I wrote this, originally, in July, 2009, in response to an article. Thinking about it today, maybe it isn't so bad to slow down a little. OK, you don't want to miss your connecting flight, especially, due to a tutle stampeed at a major metropolitan airport, but, hey. "stop and smell the roses". Come to think about it, maybe the turtles will stop and EAT the roses.

We measure the success of a comeback by Britany Spears with the headline, "Britney Spears Is Abs-olutely Fabulous" (article). Not the quality of her voice, the flash of her dancing, the glamor or her show, but the look of her stomach! "You look maarvelous!" still reigns. I'm looking through old blogs to either remove them, or see what I think now. I wrote this in January 2009 and it's still true, only, perhaps more so. The rich and beautiful are still on pinacles in our society while people doing really good work are often relegated to the "back page".
